The Wave - London

wave-16-12-0950,000 people from all across Britain descended upon London's Grosvenor Square to participate in a march through the city centre to eventually surround the Houses of Parliament.

Taking place on a freezing December afternoon, two days prior to the commencement of the talks on Monday 7th in Copenhagen, the event was organized by the Climate Change Coalition as an opportunity for the public to demonstrate their support of a global governmental agreement to reduce carbon emissions by 2012. People of all ages dressed in blue, some with faces painted, others carrying a large variety of banners and musical instruments. The march finished in Westminster with Ed Miliband (Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change) giving a speach from the wave event team bus. A second march took place in Glasgow where 30,000 people attended.

British priminister Gordon Brown also invited 24 Wave supporters to 10 Downing Street after the event to hear their demands. He also gave a short video response with his thoughts which can be viewed at the bottom of this page.

Saveit4aSong founder Gillian Harding reported an incredible atmosphere. “This was actually the first major demonstration that I’ve ever been to, but I was really moved by this march. There were so many people and it just shows how deeply the public care about this agreement. It was fun to be able to walk through London’s streets without any traffic. People were enjoying themselves and on-lookers were smiling. It is proof that if organised correctly, events like this can be truly special and peaceful. I just hope that the World leaders can secure something that will make a difference. ”
