Why Saveit4aSong?
200 species are becoming extinct every 24 hours. This is a thousand times faster than the normal rate mandated by evolution.
The world’s population has tripled since 1950. Today, there are over 6.5 billion people and this number is expected to rise to 9 billion within the next 30-40 years. The Earth’s resources are already under strain and we are damaging major eco-systems through our demands. On top of this, the climate is changing, and despite the growing media attention, people are increasingly reluctant to believe that it is of any concern. This means that we need a major shift in the way that people view the subject.
There is a lot of positive work being done around the world by NGOs and there is a fast-growing community of conservationists and people who care. Most conservation charities are fashioned to appeal to a more senior demographic, who have the spare income to donate. Consequently their communicating materials often contain text-heavy content that fails engage or embrace the younger generations.
Inspiring young people to take an active interest in world conservation is no easy challenge. Over 50% of the world’s population now live in cities and urban areas. Today’s first-world youth are focused on exciting interactive games, iPods, internet, DVDs and phone apps. Consequently young people are spending less and less time playing outside. On average, people have less contact with the natural world than ever before and are disconnected with the significance of biodiversity for our survival on the planet. According to a survey by Natural England, less than a quarter of children (24 per cent) visit a local patch of green weekly, whereas 53 percent of their parents did. Young people need to be re-connected with nature, both for their education and for the future of our planet.
In order to plant nature back in young people’s hearts, Saveit4aSong aims to connect conservation with what they already love: pop music, concerts, competitions, films, websites, mobile apps, online games and technology... and above all, provide them with the opportunity to be inspired, be creative and have the power to help raise awareness themselves.
